[Update 2008-06-03: I believe that the problems I had was actually caused by spam attacks and not related to Woopra. Hence today I reinstalled the woopra plug-in to weconverse and have begun using the tools]

[WARNING UPDATE 2008-04-25 14:50 GMT+1: The kind of application described in this post requires the installation of software provided by other parties, in this case from woopra.com. A couple of hours ago I experienced some strange behavior on the weconverse.com site. The effects (file date modifications, som extra files added to the server, etc) reminds of a known spam attack, which I thought applied to other versions of Wordpress. Even though I have no reason to believe that woopra is the causee, I have temporarily removed it from my server because the strange things happened after I installed woopra.]

imageWe are who we are and who we are need explanations  (guess where I got that from :-).

Last night I digged into my  dile (digital pile) of podcasts, blogs, news sources, and more. In episode 40 of the WordPress podcast I heard about Woopra, which looks like an extremely interesting service. The people behind Woopra (Elie Khoury, Jad Younan, John Pozadzides and the team of iFusion Labs) says that Woopra is:

the world’s most comprehensive, information rich, easy to use, real-time Web tracking and analysis application. And it’s free!

My impression so far is that Woopra is like Google Analytics (and similar services), but offers a number of additional features. In particular: real time (data analysis, live tracking and web stats), more comprehensive (richer UI, site type focus), and most of all - built in capabilities for conversations between managers and visitors of the site (Click-to-Chat). Woopra is managed through an application installed on the site owners personal computer (Windows, MacOS, Linux). For example, I can tag some visitors to weconverse.com and whenever they return to the site my desktop application will notify me.

Woopra seems to be geared more towards personal/SME’s than corporate web sites. It was Launched April 9 and is still in beta. Up until today the services was by invitation only. I have signed up, installed the tools, but still wait for an approval to go ahead with weconverse.com.

Meanwhile, you can take a look at some reviews. The 10 minute video below from Johny.org is unfortunately without narration, but gives a pretty good idea of what we can expect.

image A new type of market interaction in the form of branded add-ons have emerged with the increased use of social media. By "add-ons" I am referring to things such as plug-ins, widgets, gadgets, templates, applications, etc. used to enhance the functions and aesthetics of social media services.

Initially the add-ons were typically offered for a fee/donation or as free open source stuff. Developers of the open source variants frequently give their work away as a method of marketing themselfes. Of course a measure of altruism is typically involved as well. For example Andreas Viklund have published a great number of free open source design templates for web sites and blogs. In that case Andreas Viklund is "the brand" (even though Andreas makes some money from ads on his web site).

Another, more commercially oriented, branding approach is found where the Southern Highlands town of Bowral have developed the Tulip Time Theme for Wordpress. Likewise Highlands by Design made and publish the Silver Lexus theme. Bloggers may use the themes, thus promoting a brand (Tilip Times and Lexus), but are also required to link back to the provider. In that fashion the brand is communicated when the theme disseminates on the web.

The increasingly popular approach when brands develop applications for Facebook does also fall into the category of "marketing through add-ons". Presumably this method will be even more useful when other social networks support application add-ons. Googles Open Social initiative might be a ground breaker in this context.

Now let us look into the case that drew me into writing this post. Last week Ståle Raknes commented on a post here in weconverse. He also said that I, who is so obsessed by good web design, should offer a printer friendly version of weconverse’s posts and pages. I could do nothing but agree. The idea had actually crossed my mind earlier. Unfortunately Mandigo by tom, the theme used in weconverse (described further in Swedish), does not offer any built in feature for printer friendly page layouts. Before this summer I looked into how printing could be done - and realised it would take me more than 20 minutes. As I am not very fond of paper, my  decision then was to postpone a "print this" feature. But now. when at least one of the weconversers seems to want it, I had to yield.

After re-visiting the plug-ins directory for WordPress I found two plug-ins that I could use. WP-print by Lester ‘GaMerZ’ Chan looked at first very promising. But some of its technical details made me vary. The other one was the HP Blog Printing plug-in, which currently is available for WordPress and Movable Type.

I guess you all know HP as a big brand in printing technology. Therefore it is interesting to see how they in this case have approached social media with the (assumed) intention to promote the use of printers. The plug-in itself is hosted at Tabblo, which describes itself as "The Tabblo Print Toolkit (TPT) is a suite of developer tools for making websites more printable". At Tabblo the plug-in is described:

HP Blog Printing makes it easy to add full-featured printing to your blog so users can enjoy a customized read on the go. Starting at the print button, readers can pick and choose the posts they want to print, free of sidebars, ads and other clutter. Each great-looking printout is fully formatted to reduce paper waste.

imageTabblo links to TechCrunch as a demo site. I tried it out and realised that the actual implementation is rather non conventional. Take for example that I had to provide an e-mail address just to download the software. I have never run into another plug-in that even asks for my personal information.

In my view the installation was not as straight forward as I expect from such a well known brand. I do not want to be too technical here, so I will only mention that besides uploading and activating the plug-in I also had to modify the PHP code in some files. Even though that is described in the instructions, my bet is that many regular WordPress users will be scared away. At least I was until Ståle motivated me go ahead.

When users press the "print button" a new window hosted by HP’s Smartwebbprinting.com pops up (see illustration here). In other words, their blog print feature is depentent on a web service outside your WordPress installation.

By default the last 30 posts are selected for printing. Awkward for a visitor that justs wants to print one post. Furthermore, to clear the check boxes one has to klick a red "x"-icon which connotes "delete" more than "un check". I wish good luck to anyone wants to print out a relatively old post. You mave have to browse through pages of post listings. On the other hand, the print outs look really nice. And (of course :-) the plug-in attempts to immedieately print the result to your default printer. The only thing you can configure in the plug-in’s feature is the print icon graphic and size.

Unfortunately only posts can be printed, not static pages or side bars. When experimenting further I found that attempts to use the HP Blog printing feature from a static page gives the error "Sorry, this posts is password protected and not printable" (their spelling error, but I make those too :-). Most likely a bug when handling pages.

To summarize the HP Blog Printing plug in it is an interesting approach that some bloggers, like Neville Hobson (and I), will find useful. How brand enhancing it will be for HP is an open question. My recommendation is that HP streamlines the installation procedure and looks over what can be printed and how it is selected.

image Finally, I decided to also install WP-print, even though it too requred some PHP modifications. On the other hand visitors of weconverse can easily print out individual posts as well as pages. I have also enabled the options that includes a reference to the source, a list of URL s for the links, and a copyright notice. I do not doubt for a minute that WP-print enhances the brand value of Lester Chan.

As most of contemporary web sites, weconverse is in a steady beta. I have finally found Mandigo, a design template that I like both in terms of aestethics and functionality. I really appreciated WP-Andreas09 (originally designed by the prominent swede Andreas Viklund) which I used first. But I have used that template for customers and wanted a more soft feel to the site. Given that I seldomly visit other blogs, just read their feeds, the looks of weconverse might be important only for me.

It will probably take a couple of weeks before I have had time to sort out some problems. These are currently mainly related to the RSS-feeds. I thank all of you that already subscribe and apologize for the mess you probably see. To my knowledge the worst issue is that Swedish characters disappear in the feeds. I still have to do some experimentation and I ask you to bear with me until I get that fixed. Furthermore, the presentation of the feeds on the site needs to be sorted out, including the hidden URI:s. Eventually the feeds addresses will probably have to change in order for me to manage useful statistics. I will let you know if you need to change something.

As you may have noticed I have also added some functions to weconverse. I know offer videos, both from sources on the weconverse server and from a growing body of third party video sharing services. The weconverse pod podcast is up and running. It will soon be registered in iTunes too. For fun I threw in a mobile version of weconverse with the help from Feed2Mobile by Kaywa. Mainly because their service supports QR-codes. I guess many of you do not know what that is, simply because we are so behind Japan. Check out the Wikipedia entry for QR code and listen (in Swedish) to episode 5 of QritiQ if you want to know more (which you should).

There are a couple of other ideas I would like to realize here. Future will tell if that happens. If you have any suggestions, please let me know. Meanwhile I wish everyone that celebrates the Easter holiday a happy one.
